A sweet entertainment that goes to show how Hong Kong in the 80s was like Hollywood in the 30s.  The classic tale of the Butterfly Lovers, two scholars, one of whom is a girl in disguise, in an time when girls were forbidden to study in China.  The plot does bear many resemblances than those Disney cartoons involving rebellious young ladies, but this movie is far more satisfying and sweet.  There are many moments of comedy and delight, and ultimately heartbreak.  What is most surprising, given that Tsui Hark is directing, is that there is almost no kung fu involved, which is testament to Tsui's talents as an all-around showman.
