Details
Unknowingly,
this harmless 1964 film, the Beatles' first, ushered
in both the era of the music video and the demise of
the conventional movie musical. A wacky, anything-goes
joke-laden narrative inspired by the absurdism of the
Marx Brothers (though in my opinion the Beatles are
far less annoying) is a perfect setting for the half
dozen musical numbers whose range of creativity and
cinematic rule-breaking can be construed as both amateurish
and brilliant.
