One element of movies that I'll be happy to leave behind with the 1990s are these convoluted, intertwining narratives with a hip, nonchalant attitude towards drugs, sex and human life.  Few things are more annoying than a movie that thinks it's being hip; it doesn't help that the movie begins in manner less hip and more interesting than what follows.  There's a no-nonsense realism to Sarah Polley struggling as a check-out girl -- her performance throughout the film is edgy and absorbing, but it is the beginning, before she succumbs to the plot's uninspiring sadistic treatment, where her character is brimming with potential experiences.  With the possible exception of , no other character -- not even a charismatic Taye Diggs -- is remotely interesting.  Katie Holmes is surprisingly tepid and unfit for the big screen.  Don't go down this dead end direction for cinematic storytelling.
