Days of Being Wild

I film that seems to slip into the ether, Wong Kar Wai's breatkthrough film is heavy on nostalgia and light on just about everything else. Seedy, grimy, and much more heartfelt than his more technically dazzling Chungking Express or Fallen Angels, this is another of his stories involving people who casually bump into each other and affect each other's lives profoundly while putting up nonchalant fronts and going on their merry way. More specifically, Wong renders the intimate spaces between a man and his lover, mother and a random male friend with startling accuracy. Leslie Cheung gives a quirky, moody performance as the main instigator of this chaotic connection of people; Maggie Cheung, Andy Lau and Rebecca Pan play his "dupes" admirably. Requires repeated viewing in order to really get it.
