I envy the Maysles - how are they able to situate themselves in a real life interaction and let it play out like a dramatic scene as if they and their camera simply were not present? And at the same time, like with Frederick Wiseman, I resent their lack of acknowledging their own presence and how it might affect the proceedings. My response is one of both awe and distrust...
