mixed -- It may have been both too much and not enough -- like someone who you don't really have much in common with in terms of lifestyle or friends coming up to you and pouring his heart out to you. I seem to have a kneejerk reaction against heroin addiction depicted in cinema (GUITAR is an autobiographical account of Garrel's drug-addled breakup with 60s icon Nico). Or maybe the pain was too much to bear in light of my own relationship struggles. Maybe I just need to see a film of his that I click with. Something similar may have been true with me and Desplechin, given that I hated MY SEX LIFE OR HOW I GOT INTO AN ARGUMENT and absolutely adored ESTHER KAHN.

I like Tarkovsky but with significant reservations. He walks a fine line between the cinematically mysterious and the thematically oversimplified. I could have easily given NOSTALGHIA a "mixed" and thinking about it some more I think it really deserves a "yes". For me the film hinges not on that celebrated candle sequence, but on the long rant by the main character's would-be mistress in the film's center. I couldn't tell whether she was scorning the man or if Tarkovsky was scorning her. It seemed to both reinforce and refute Tarkovsky's careerlong chauvinism towards women.
