screen capture of the week:
LAUGHING GAS (1907) - A black woman with a toothache gets an overdose of laughing gas from her dentist and laughs her way through the rest of the film, making everyone she runs into laugh uncontrollably as well. Bizarre beyond words, but in a weird way it's a masterpiece. There's something to it that's elemental to black-white relations throughout the history of Hollywood comedy -- I guess it can be defined as the struggle between merely fulfilling the role of minstrel stereotype and transcending it with human qualities that are both unique and genuine to the character. In this final shot she seems to be obliging the filmmaker's request for a crazed laughing fit, and yet those eyes look like she's gone into her own world.
